Financially Fit Children

Hey, hey BF's

Hope you guys are having a stellar weekend... we in the Sergeant Fam definitely are!
Last night we spent the night with our good friends and the kids best friends, what's awesome about this set up is that The Artist and our friend's oldest is the same age and they are in the same kindergarten class, sitting at the same table... I think both he and The Artist may be each others first love... not that I'm rushing... It's just cute watching it unfold, as for the youngest 2., our baby boys are the same age and call each other best friend... It is the cutest thing, but I digress...

The real reason for this blog is all about financialyl fit kids... The Sarg and I are completely guilty of buying our babies whatever they want when they wanted... but I was thinking the other day (which is dangerous) about them using their own money to buy what they want... Thanks to D.R. I figured it out.

Case in point... Today they were begging for a video game, so Sarg and I said alright... You want this game; then each of you have to fork up half of what's in your bank to purchase it... At first their were groans, but after us explaining why both our 6 & 3 year old was all for it. They each put in $10 and were able to purchase the game they were begging us for earlier... We also explained that they were to tithe every Sunday and put the excess in savings. They were stoked... a feeling I was not expecting.

It filled me with such happiness to watch my babies use their hard earned money for something they so badly wanted and be excited about starting a savings.
While I know starting a kid off like that isn't the easiest thing in the world it's definitely worth a try.
So to you my Bloggy Friends I charge you this...Give this a shot and let me know what happens...

PS. My kids don't get an allowance, they get commission. You don't get allowances in the real world so start them off right. I double dog dare ya...

I am almost certain you are going to be super happy with the ressults.
So here's to a new generation raising financially fit kids who don't use credit cards!
At first it's going to be hard, but just keep it up and you'll see in the end it was all worth it.

Little Man has an account that all his birthday money and stuff goes into. It's there so that one day he can start purchasing stuff that he wants instead of us. He hasn't out right asked for anything yet. One day I will have to explain his bank account to him. I can't stand credit cards.

I'm not a fan of the spoiled out there. You see these shows where these kids are maxing out their parents credit cards and their own. It's terrible. I don't have kids yet, but I will definitely be following your ways. :)

Bravo to you and Sarg - it completely changes the ballgame when your kids spend their own money instead of yours to purchase "wants". They learn to make intelligent tradeoffs, how to plan, how to budget, etc. There's a lot less whining around the house and more pride. Big win all around!
